YWCA Bergen County Now Offering Fitness and Friendship Fridays Program with Hackensack University Medical Center will include health curriculum

Area residents interested in a wide range of health and wellness topics are welcome to attend YWCA Bergen County’s Fitness and Friendship Fridays. The fun, social and informative new program is offered monthly on Fridays at lunchtime, free of charge, at the YWCA at 112 Oak Street in Ridgewood.

The YWCA will host guest speakers from its program partner, Hackensack University Medical Center (HackensackUMC), at 11:30 a.m. on the first Friday of the month beginning in November. The speaker series includes a light lunch served at 12:15 p.m., and will end each week at 1:30 p.m.

Scheduled speaker topics are as follows:
• November 4: Standing Tall Against Falls
Information on risk factors for falls, steps to prevent them and what to do in the event of a fall
• December 2: Women’s Health: The Big Three
Education, awareness and promotion of healthy lifestyles as a means of reducing the number of new cases of heart disease, stroke and cancer
• January 4: Keeping Your Mind Sharp
This program employs a fun approach to introduce the effects of normal aging on learning and memory, list several ways to improve brain functioning, and use specific “brain exercises” to prevent “senior moments.”
• February 3: Keeping Up the Beat: Heart Health
Learn about disease management and prevention, and what lifestyle choices you can make to improve your overall health.

• March 3: Bone Up on Your Health: Osteoporosis
Education on osteoporosis risk factors and treatment interventions; practical tips to promote bone health and prevent falls; and recommendations to improve quality of life through healthier lifestyle behaviors.
• April 7: Move to Get Fit
This program will focus on the benefits of exercise to promote healthy aging and explain the current recommendations for an active and fit older adult.

Fitness and Friendship Fridays attendees are invited to arrive early to participate in chair yoga. The yoga session runs from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. All poses and stretches are done sitting, or standing and supported by a chair. Parking is available in the YWCA lot, which is flat and allows easy access to the Oak Street facility.

The speaker series is co-sponsored by the YWCA and HackensackUMC’s Health Awareness Regional Program under the auspices of Hackensack Meridian Health, with a curriculum designed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services.
